Pasache Music wants to thank Eric Kurimski who together with Sofía Rei Koutsovitis and Edward Pérez brought us a three-day music series to celebrate Afro Peruvian rythms in New York. They started Friday at Drom joining percussionist/cajón player Marcos Napa and drummer/cajón player Hector Morales with Alcatraz, performing their contagious festejos such as the traditional "Mayoral" and sensual landos as Chabuca Granda's "Cardo o Ceniza", much as they first recorded together in 2007 but two years better. Special guest Peruvian saxophonist Rafael "Fusa" Miranda also made a detour from his performances in the US and surprised us all. On Saturday Edward Pérez called on Peruvian drummer and cajón player Jorge "Coqui" Pérez Albela who came all the way from Boston, MA, and saxophonist Mark Small to play his compositions such as "Sweet Pea" and "The Anthem of Your Absence" . The quintet closed the Noche Peruana at Pasache Music HQ with a powerful Kiri Escobar's "Azucar de Caña" followed by Juan Medrano Cotito's "Se Me Van Los Pies". Blue Note on Sunday was really Eric Kurimski's great achievement. To showcase and be able to perform not only festejos and landos, but also traditional Peruvian waltzes such as Carlos Hayre's "Despertar" and Pedro Miguel Arrese's "Desesperación" has stablished a big precedent not only for Afro Peruvian Jazz but most importantly for Peruvian creole music: Música Criolla del Perú en Blue Note!Roberto "Chino" Bolaños was superb at the cajón and the Caitro Soto's "Toro Mata" gave Edward Pérez, Sofía Rei Koutsovitis, and Eric Kurimski an opportunity to show Afro Peruvian Jazz is here to stay.
